As happens every few months, Facebook made some big changes this past week. And, predictably, a lot of people complained about it. It’s like clockwork. It really doesn’t do any good to complain though, because Facebook is going to to what it wants to do. The trick is to work around the changes. That’s what we will learn about today.
The big change that everyone currently hates is the scrolling news ticker on the right side of the main page. It’s always there, and it keeps updating in real time as your friends do things like update their status, make comments, add pictures, or anything else:
Apparently a lot of people find it a little distracting. If that’s you, there are ways to get rid of it – depending on which web browser you are using.
If you use Internet Explorer, I think you’re out of luck. Microsoft doesn’t really like for us peons to mess with their products. If you know of a way to accomplish this in IE, please let us know in the comments section.
If you use Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera or Safari – all you have to do is install the addon called “FB Purity”. You can get it here: www.fbpurity.com. When you go to that site, you will see a big bold link in the middle that says “Install F.B. Purity”. Do that. You will need to restart your browser for the add-on to take effect.
When it comes back up, take a look at Facebook and you will see something new – a little “status bar” up near the top center of the page:
To configure this little gem, click on “F.B. Purity”. You will get this screen:
As you will see, there are lots of checkboxes on there. That means you have a lot of options! Just go down the list and check the box for each thing you want to HIDE on your Facebook page.
More specifically, to get rid of the Evil Ticker, you will find it in the right-side list, third from the bottom. Check that box, click “Save and Close” and go see the magic on your new Facebook page.
Interesting note: the makers of the app can’t use the name “Facebook” in the title due to trademark restrictions – so FB Purity stands for “Fluff Busting Purity”.
You might want to explore the other options in FB Purity also – you can really hide a lot of junk and make your Facebook news feed a much more pleasant experience. Of course, you will then be completely out of the loop when your friends like a picture, change a relationship or get poked, but perhaps that’s a sacrifice you are willing to make.
