I got an email last week from a friend who couldn’t seem to find her Windows 7 Recycle Bin – “…I have been trying to find that thing and I can’t seem to locate it. I deleted a photo I want to get back so I went to recycle and discovered it wasn’t on the monitor screen any more. When I went to search I get some word document I had saved but not what I was looking for. HELP.”
One of the changes in the more recent versions of Windows is that the old familiar Recycle Bin icon isn’t automatically on the desktop along with the other icons any more. Why did Microsoft decide to not put it there by default? Who knows. Just to see if we are paying attention I guess.
In any event, it’s easy to get it back (if you want it back).
Click the Start button (the Microsoft logo in the lower left corner), and in the Search field type the word “recycle”. You will see up at the top of that window there will be an option that says:
Show or hide common icons on the desktop
When you click that, a new window will appear:
Check the box next to “Recycle Bin”. You can check whatever other icons you would like to have appear on the desktop as well. Click OK, and enjoy having your Recycle Bin back where it belongs.
